Unplug Your Kids: Gardening

The container garden was a flop! Our poor little tomato, squash, and parsley plants just couldn't take 110 degree weather. It seems like they dried up overnight. Oh well, no fresh picked veggies for us. We'll try again next year. Or maybe this winter?

  1. Why are they not mentioning daddy's ever growing
cactus I'm gonna share my candy with them anyway!Cactus Candy Ingredients:

    3 c Granulated sugar
    1 c Water
    2 tb Orange juice
    1 tb Lemon juice

    Cactus Candy Instructions:

Select prickly pear cactus (or small barrel cactus if you own this type of cactus, since it's illegal to remove it from the desert).
Remove spines and outside layer with large knife.
Cut pulp across in slices one-inch thick.
    Soak overnight in cold water.
Remove from water, cut in one0inch cubes and cook in boiling water til tender.
Cook slowly in the following syrup until nearly all the syrup is absorbed.
Do not scorch! SYRUP for 2 QUARTS of CACTUS CUBES Heat all ingredients until sugar is dissolved.
    Then add cactus.
Remover cactus from syrup, drain and roll in granulated or powdered sugar.
For colored cactus candy, any vegetable food coloring may be added to the syrup.

  2. OOohhh, I'm sorry, Boo-Boo! Thank you for sharing though.

  3. Girl, I can't get the container garden thing going either. I can't do a "real" garden due to space limitations and each year I've been in KY I've failed at the container. I keep trying though...hang in there!

  4. Try, Try, Try again. It was fun while it lasted. *smile* Maybe we'll try only one plant next year.
