Grammer is another subject,many parents teaching 1st grade chose to hold off. I again couldn't think of a reason why my children couldn't learn what a noun or verb is or when to use a period. We are not using any formal curriculum just a scope and sequence I put together from various sources. We are spenting a few weeks on nouns, abstract v concrete, plural, proper, and possessive. The Brian P. Cleary books above are wonderful, highly reccommended as well using a really hands-on, concrete approach. For example, to discuss plural nouns I showed them "1 book", then "5 books". The children then had to go through the house showing me plural nouns. We also played a "Is this a noun?" game. ie Is this ball a noun? They scream to top of their lungs, Yes! I tell you it doesn't take much for 5 yr olds. LOL.
